The Respect Young People’s Service people have been busy!

Welcome to 2024!

I wish all those reading this a peaceful and encouraging new year.

It is customary to hope for new and better things in the year ahead, but we know that for many families the passing of time seems to bring only a consolidation of their anxieties and pain. The holiday period can be especially stressful and so many people will be emerging bruised and battered – and not just emotionally. But there are reasons to be hopeful as we face the coming months and I would like to share some with you.

How do we keep funding going?

In March 2013, at a conference in Nottingham, a speaker warned us: we cannot make this a new thing – we have to help people understand it as something that is already their responsibility.

Indeed, the use of harmful, violent and aggressive behaviours towards parents and carers is not a new phenomenon, but the way we interpret it and seek to bring help has changed significantly in even the last 20 years. Not so much now about the tyrannical child, or a behavioural challenge or poor parenting, as about connection, communication and seeking for control, about mental health and an understanding of the very real risks faced by some parents. At the time of that conference, there were few specialist services in existence, and organisations were just coming to realise the extent of how many families in the UK and around the world were affected by child to parent violence.

Introducing a new CPVA Directory!

I started posting news about the project I was working on, with others, to map provision for families experiencing child to parent violence and abuse (CPVA) in 2014, with regular updates before finally launching the page on my website in October 2015. At that time we knew of maybe 30 specialist services dotted around the country, some already well established, and others already a little precarious in their funding stream. Since that time there has been an exciting slow but steady growth in provision as different agencies have got on board, speeding up most recently through the support of the Domestic Abuse Commissioner‘s work in raising the profile of CPVA.

Keeping the Directory up to date and relevant has been a mammoth task, and one which is now beyond my capabilities with the growth in services, and so I have been working with Respect for the last year to see how it might migrate onto a new platform. Respect have a long history of work with young people using violence and abuse in the home, and importantly they also already have a large database of services within the domestic abuse arena, and so I knew that this was an area of work that they had both the experience and capacity to maintain for the future. Over the last months, all members of the old directory were contacted and gave permission to move across and the new Directory was finally launched last week!

Job opportunity at Respect

An opportunity exists to lead one of Respect’s flagship projects as a Young People’s Service Development Manager, and I am excited to share the advertisement here.

 

This is an exciting opportunity to join Respect in a key role. Respect’s Young People’s Services have a well-established profile and reputation. Respect has developed:

  • an intervention addressing adolescent to parent violence and abuse which is delivered by around 20 local Authorities and
  • training and materials on working with young people who use abusive behaviour in intimate relationships.

Respect is committed to developing this area of our work and improving the response to young people who use violence and abuse in close relationships.

We are looking for an outstanding individual to lead, develop and manage Respect’s Young People’s Services Project.  Someone with a mix of skills including:

  • An understanding of practice in addressing young people’s use of abuse in close relationships.
  • A track record in developing service delivery innovations with young people or a related area
  • Understanding of the challenges in work with young people and their families and who can support practice development
  • Ability to develop new approaches and grow existing ones

Location   Flexible – Respect offices are in Bethnal Green, London, but this post will have a UK-wide remit and travel to service providers both to undertaking assessments and provide support will be part of the role.

Salary £41,722 pro rata (point 42 on Respect’s scale, related to the NJC scale) including Inner London Weighting where relevant; plus 6% pension contribution

Contract           Negotiable between full time and 3 days a week

The Respect Young People’s Programme: one year in.

The Respect Young People’s Programme (RYPP) has been running for just over a year now, and so it seemed like a good time to catch up with the director of the programme to hear how it’s been going. RYPP is an intervention for 10-16 year olds and their parents where the young person has used violence or aggressive behaviour towards a parent. Many thanks to Neil Blacklock of Respect, who has written this End of Year Report, with especial attention to lessons learnt. I was particularly interested to read about the management and organisational lessons, as this is an area which we do not address so often.  Continue reading
