The Respect Young People’s Toolkit

I met recently with Julia Worms, of the Respect Young People’s Service, to learn more about the Respect Young People’s Toolkit, which was officially launched in Britain last year, supporting work with young people using violence in close relationships.

Aside from work within criminal justice, Respect is unique in developing family violence interventions, setting standards for provision and operating as an umbrella membership organisation, as well as offering training and development.  Its independence is important, allowing freedom to operate within the voluntary sector and to develop work such as the YP Toolkit. Fifth National Practitioners’ Seminar

This was the fifth annual seminar, addressing young people’s use of violence in close relationships, presented by Respect, this time in conjunction with Nottinghamshire Domestic Violence Forum; and was attended by all manner of professionals from around the UK. As well as 2 amazing presentations to the whole group, there was a wide range of workshops to choose from. Drama in the morning from Loudmouth Education and Training introduced ways of working in schools to promote healthy, happy and safe relationships between young people; and later on we were treated to a presentation about the GREAT project (good relationships are equal and trusting), part of NDVF’s work in primary schools. Bournemouth training day, and a discussion about involving the police

An excellent training day in Bournemouth on Tuesday, attended by around 70 practitioners from around the Bournemouth and Poole area. Eddie Gallagher presented findings from his extensive research into child to parent violence (CPV). Lots of thought about the issue of parent blaming and specific reference to his Who’s in Charge Groups, a programme that he has developed in Melbourne, Australia. The group for parents runs for 8 weeks, with a ninth follow-up session, and aims to bring about a decrease in CPV, and improvement in family relationships, as parents start to become more assertive. Eddie also counsels both parents and teens as individuals – and occasionally together if they agree! Continue reading

Exciting training opportunities!

Two more training opportunities have come to my attention recently.

Eddie Gallagher will be visiting the UK at the beginning of September 2011, before heading off to Spain for an international conference. He is inviting offers for training workshops particularly.  He can be contacted at gallagher@aanet.com.au

Lynette Robinson, of Alternative Restoratives, is organising a professional awareness raising conference regarding adolescent to parent violence on September 22nd 2011, in the north of England. Lynette comes from a youth justice background where restorative justice has been used for some time, and she has done some interesting work in applying this approach to families experiencing parent abuse.
