A Review of Parent Abuse in 2012

Looking back over the last year, I was re-reading my post of January 1st 2012, which I concluded by saying

As we enter the new year, the task before us is to clearly and honestly set out the facts of parent abuse, without resorting to scare mongering and without blaming one side or another; and to do so in a way that politicians, policy makers, practitioners and public all come to recognise that abuse for what it is, and seek to support the whole family to turn their lives around.

2012 certainly proved to be an interesting and exciting year in the field of parent abuse work as people got to grips with the task at hand! Continue reading →

Adolescent to parent abuse in print

Great to see Amanda Holt’s book published this week!

This represents a real milestone in acknowledgement of the issue of parent abuse, with the first academic book entirely devoted to the issue in Britain. Not quite the go-to book for Christmas present ideas maybe, but definitely one to slip through for yourself.

Safeguarding issues in child to parent violence

A lot has been written about the difficulties in adopting a safeguarding response to the issue of parent abuse. First of all, it falls outside the normative model of child as victim, to which the responses are generally geared; and the safeguarding of vulnerable adults guidance is not usually applied to the parents in these situations, as they are not considered vulnerable within the specific terms. Amanda Holt speaking at Surrey University

An inspiring talk from Amanda Holt yesterday at Surrey University, based on her forthcoming book: Adolescent-to-Parent Abuse: Current Understandings in Research, Policy and Practice. The book, from Policy Press, due out in November this year, will be the first academic text on parent abuse to be published in Britain. Offering a thorough overview of the subject, Amanda first considered the similarities and differences with other forms of family violence; and then went on to examine what we can learn from the different types of data available. Current understandings in research, policy and practice

Staff, students and public are invited to hear Amanda Holt speak at a seminar, “Youth-to-Parent Abuse: Current Understandings in Research, Policy and Practice”, on Wednesday 2nd May 2012. The event will be held at the University of Surrey, UK, from 16.00 to 17.30. Dr Amanda Holt also has an article in the most recent edition of Social Policy and Society, a parent abuse themed issue.

I don’t believe it!

We should feel encouraged that, increasingly, friends, colleagues, acquaintances are accepting of the fact that there are parents who face regular abuse from their own children; and understand that parents may suffer further humiliation at the hands of the authorities when they do report the abuse, and its cause is identified as a failure of proper parenting. But there are still some aspects of this phenomenon that seem a step too far, even for convinced supporters. I was in just such a conversation recently when I introduced the problem of parents actually being punished for their children’s behaviour. “I don’t believe it – show me the evidence” was the response. It is indeed hard to believe that we still live in a society that is so procedurally rigid that we cannot accommodate the situations that do not fit the standard template.

The ‘terrorist’ in my home

Amanda Holt has brought another recent article to my attention.

‘The terrorist in my home’: teenagers’ violence towards parents – constructions of parent experiences in public online message boards, presents analysis of two particular online message boards used by parents. This is an important discussion at a time when parents are increasingly turning to this source of help, having been unsuccessful in attracting support via other means.
