Calling all those involved in delivering or commissioning work to support parents experiencing child to parent violence and abuse! I am pleased to repost the information below from the University of Sheffield, who are undertaking an evaluative study into work with children using harmful behaviours towards their parents and carers.
Child-to-parent violence is a distressing and complex issue where children, often adolescents, exhibit aggressive or violent behaviour towards their parents or caregivers. This form of violence can manifest physically, emotionally, or verbally, and it creates significant challenges for families. It’s important to recognise that child-to-parent violence can have various underlying causes, such as underlying mental health issues, family dynamics, or exposure to violence in the home or community. A Child-to-Parent Violence Perpetrator Programme aims to provide a structured and supportive environment where young people can learn to understand and manage their emotions, develop healthy coping strategies, and improve communication skills. These programmes guide participants towards non-violent conflict resolution within families through counselling, therapy, and/or psychoeducational approaches.
We as a group of researchers from University of Sheffield would like to explore views about child to parent programmes and their effectiveness. We would like to invite any practitioners, or other relevant stakeholders, to contribute their views and experiences through an online group discussion. Our objectives are:
1. To explore the perspective and role of support workers and key workers who support child perpetrator programmes.
2. To explore key contextual factors which might affect engagement and outcomes for young people and their families
4. To explore and describe any differential access, experiences and outcomes of the
programmes by gender, socioeconomic and ethnic group.
5. To identify the strengths and weaknesses of Child-to-Parent Violence Perpetrator Programmes.
We invite you to sign up for one of four incredible workshops to make an impactful contribution to the field of child-to-parent violence. This will take place on the following dates:
