For as long as we have been writing and talking about children’s violence towards parents, there has been a sense of frustration that there is not better data available to inform research and practice. We have even looked at ways to include questions in the Crime Survey – so how could I pass by an opportunity to publicise this latest piece of research!
The Centre for Gender and Violence Research (CGVR, University of Bristol) are conducting research on behalf of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to support the development of new survey questions on domestic abuse for the Crime Survey England and Wales (CSEW). This research comes from the need to improve the crime survey’s measure of domestic abuse and the ONS wants the crime survey to produce more accurate estimates of coercive controlling domestic abuse. It’s important that measures are accurate because the CSEW is a key source of evidence on this topic.
We’re interested to know how people understand and respond to sensitive questions on domestic abuse and are currently consulting with victims-survivors of family abuse specifically (via an online interview) asking for their thoughts/ comments on the draft revised questions. We do not ask specifically about people’s experiences during the interview, but we obviously recognise that their experiences will inform their response to the draft crime survey questions.
If this sounds like something you would be interested in contributing to, please take a look at this Information Sheet for more details.
